The largest and very crucial nerve in the human body is the sciatic nerve, which goes from the lower back, running down through the buttock, and doing to the leg.

Sciatic nerve is connected to the spine so it pays the most important role in walking.

Sciatica is a medical condition caused by pressure on the sciatic nerve, at the end of the spine. It causes a pain that starts in the lower back and goes all the way down the leg(s), preventing normal walking function.

Symptoms of sciatica:

  • Difficulties moving the legs or walking for long periods
  • Back pain and pain in one leg
  • Pain increases when sitting
  • Numbness in the leg(s)
  • Burning sensation in the leg(s)

Few reasons for chronic sciatica pain:

  • Strained muscle: the inflammation compresses the root of the nerve, which causes a pain.
  • Pregnancy: The increase weight elevates the stress on the back, which can cause sciatica.
  • Slipped disc: Known as pinched nerve.
  • Degenerative disk: Back irritation which happens when certain spine movement exposes the disk proteins.
  • Piriformis syndrome: When the piriformis muscle pinches the sciatic nerve
  • Lumbar Spinal stenosis: Narrowed spinal canal.
  • Spinal tumor: Tumors appear even on the nerve root.
  • Scar tissue: The pressure of this tissue on the sciatic nerve will cause pain.
  • Sacroiliac joint dysfunction: Irritation of the sacroiliac joint.
  • Isthmic spondylolisthesis: Fracture of the bone which connects the joints near the spine, causing shearing between vertebras.

Treatment for chronic sciatica pain includes:

  • Stretches and exercises
  • Medications for muscle relaxation
  • Bed rest
  • Physiotherapy
  • If the case of sciatica is very serious, it may require surgery to relieve the pain.
